BLUBBER BLASTING
An eight ton, 45-foot sperm whale, dead for some time, washed up on the Pacific
Ocean beach in Oregon. Initially, it was a curiosity for local residents and visitors,
but soon the foul smell of rotting whale pervaded the area and became unbearable.
The authorities thought that if they buried the carcass, it would probably just
get uncovered by the tide - so after much discussion it was decided to blast the
blubber to bits using dynamite. Unfortunately, the explosives experts miscalculated
the amount of dynamite needed and the resulting explosion sent pieces of blubber
raining down over a stunned crowd of curious spectators that had gathered. The
authorities were forced to organise a task force to comb the area, collect all
the pieces of blubber and burn the lot. It took six days to complete the job.
