ELEPHANT LOVE
The people living in a small village on the edge of the jungle of southern
India domesticated a female elephant to help with their logging activities. The
elephant was named Madhu and when not working, was chained to a tree. Although
it's unusual for wild elephants to be attracted to domesticated elephants, for
one three-ton bull elephant it was love at first sight and he wouldn't leave Madhu's
side. At first, the villagers tried to lure the huge beast away with bananas,
but when that failed, they tried intimidating it by shouting and throwing firecrackers.
This worked, in that it drove the animal back into the jungle, but not before
it left a trail of demolished huts in its wake. Still consumed with love, the
bull elephant sneaked back into the village that night and freed Madhu by breaking
her chains, and the two lovers eloped back into the jungle.
