ALIVE AND BURIED
A convicted bank robber, sentenced for life in Strangeways Prison, Manchester,
came up with a plan to escape. He had noticed that when a prisoner dies, the body
was placed in a coffin that was then nailed shut by the caretaker and transported
to a local cemetery. The prisoner promised the caretaker a hefty slice of his
buried loot if he helped him to escape. The caretaker agreed that he wouldn't
nail the coffin shut until the morning and then after the funeral, he would dig
him up. On the agreed night the prisoner, equipped with snacks and a flashlight,
sneaked into the mortuary, squeezed into the coffin next to die dead body and
managed to pull the lid over. With a few hours till the morning, the prisoner
fell asleep. He awoke to hear the coffin being nailed shut and then felt the coffin
being carried, put down and then transported. After about half an hour, the van
stopped and the coffin was then carried and lowered into a grave. He could just
about hear the priests last rites and when that was over, he waited a few minutes
more, before pulling out his flashlight and eating his snacks. Wondering how long
it would be before the caretaker came to dig him up, curiosity got the better
of him and he decided to have a look at who he was sharing the coffin with. He
shone the flashlight on to the dead man's face, but was stunned to see that it
was the caretaker himself.
