CRIME NEVER PAYS
A boy from San Francisco, fresh out of school, had just landed a job as a
department store detective. Full of enthusiasm, he was eager to catch as many
shoplifters as he could. One summer's day, he saw a suspicious-looking man wandering
around. The man had been in the store for over an hour, picking up items, looking
around and putting them back again. The young detective watched as the man eventually
approached the cash till with a children's colouring book. As the man handed a
$10 note to the cashier, he leaned over, grabbed the cash-till tray and ran out
of the store. The detective was about to give chase when the cashier shouted to
him not to bother. Waving the $10 note at the detective, the cashier smiled and
said, "There was only $2.15 in the till. We made a profit!"
