SAFELY HIDDEN

Police in California were baffled by the disappearance of a thief who ran out of the back door of a shop he had just robbed just as officers of the law charged in through the front door. The rear of the shop opened out on to a deserted, high-walled alleyway, and the street to which the alleyway led was also deserted. They searched for the robber for over an hour but were unable to find him. For the next five days the officers involved in the incident puzzled over where the man could have gone. There were no obvious hiding places and so it seemed that the man had simply disappeared into thin air. Eventually the man's whereabouts became known to the police after they heard banging coming from the boot of their patrol car. The officers pulled over and opened the boot to investigate the noise and discovered, to their great surprise, the thief, who had been hiding in there afraid to come out for the previous five days.
