SNOOKER FRENZY
Police in the fishing town of Grimsby in the north of England were puzzled
by the number of car thefts reported on one single day. While there is nothing
unusual about car theft, the number of cars involved -especially the number of
red cars involved - gave them cause for concern. The police decided to set a trap
in order to catch the thieves and, to this end, left a red car apparently unlocked
and unattended in a car park known to be popular with car thieves. They went off
to lie in wait and hadn't been waiting long before someone took the bait and attempted
to drive the car away. The police grabbed the villain and tried to find out from
him what had been going on. It emerged that the reason so many cars, and especially
red cars, were being stolen that day was that rival gangs were indulging in a
game of "snooker". This involved them stealing a red car, then picking a colour
from the set of snooker balls before stealing another red car - and so on until
they finished off 'potting' a black car.
