DONT ALWAYS TRUST YOUR TEACHERS
A lecturer at a medical school was trying to convey the importance of using
the sense of taste during the process of diagnosis. To demonstrate his point he
conducted a diabetes test. The lecturer asked some of his students to provide
urine samples for the test. When the students brought back the flasks of their
urine, the lecturer dipped a finger into a sample and then licked it, telling
his students that he could determine the sugar content by the taste. He then told
the students to repeat the tests themselves. Although most of them were feeling
a bit ill from the suggestion, they all feared failure if they refused to go along
with the request. After the students performed the test, albeit with looks of
disgust on their faces, the lecturer moved on to reveal the importance of observation
in diagnosis. He showed them that he had been dipping his index finger in the
urine samples before licking his middle finger. At which point, several students
ran to the classroom windows and were violently sick.
