EARLY WAKE UP CALL
A researcher from the Health Education Authority became curious about a small
town in the Lake District of northern England, after coming across an alarmingly
large increase in the number of births being reported. Eager to investigate this
phenomenon, the researcher decided to spend a weekend in the town. The researcher
stayed in a friendly bed and breakfast, but after a day scrutinising the town's
records, still couldn't understand what could be causing the residents to have
so many children. At about 6am on Monday morning, the researcher was suddenly
woken by a loud rumbling and he felt like the whole building was shaking. Worried
that it might be an earthquake, the researcher ran downstairs and banged on the
landlady's door. The landlady eventually managed to calm him down and told him
that the rumbling was due to a freight train that passed by every weekday morning
at about the same time. The landlady went on to explain that the town had been
a victim to the train's rumblings since the tracks were strengthened over a year
ago. The researcher, understanding the effects on couples being woken up early
in the morning, realised what was causing the mysterious population explosion.
