BARREL Of LAUGHS
When a building worker was applying for compensation after an accident he
was asked to write down what, in his opinion, had been the cause of the accident.
On the form he wrote "lack of forward planning". His insurers were puzzled by
this and contacted him for clarification. It seems that the man had been given
the task of lowering a huge amount of bricks to street level after too many had
been taken up to the top of a building to complete a job. Having set up a pulley,
he tied a rope around a barrel full of bricks, wound it through the pulley and
dropped the rest of the rope the ground. His plan was to lower the barrel via
the pulley, an operation he would control from the ground. Unfortunately, as the
barrel began to descend it soon became clear that, even with the assistance of
the pulley, he was getting lifted off the ground. Like a true hero he held on
for dear life, smashing his kneecaps as he passed the barrel on his by now rapid
journey up the side of the building. When the barrel hit the ground it smashed
open and the bricks fell out with the result that he began to head groundwards
at a remarkable speed. He hit the pavement with a thump, breaking both ankles
but finally letting go of the rope, which caused the remains of the barrel to
come crashing down around his ears.
