LAKE LIE
An American woman on holiday in New Zealand was staying in a hotel by a lake
that is famous for its bright blue colour. She was sitting outside on the terrace
of the hotel bar, gazing out over the blue lake, and when the waiter brought her
a glass of beer, she asked him how the lake became such a rich blue colour. The
waiter, bored of being asked this question throughout the summer, told her that
every year at the end of summer the lake is drained and the bottom is painted
blue. The tourist seemed to accept this explanation, so the waiter laughed to
himself and thought no more of the affair. Towards the end of the summer though,
he was surprised to see the same woman at the hotel again. As he took her order
he made polite conversation, in which he stated that she must really like the
hotel - to which she replied: "Oh yes, and I just had to come back and see the
painting of the lake bottom".
