NEIGHBOUR VIBES

A woman had lived in an apartment in Manhattan for most of her adult life, but her landlord was determined to get rid of her in order to put up the rent. One day, the woman noticed a new tenant moving in next door to her and she invited him round for a drink. However, the man told her he belonged to a religious sect which forbade him to be alone with a woman and closed the door on her. The woman gave the matter no more thought until strange things began to happen. Every night at about 2:00am, she heard what sounded like someone being tortured and the man chanting. Occasionally she would spot the man carrying a heavy, black bag upstairs. One morning, she noticed that the bag was leaking what looked like blood and, somewhat scared, she called the police. The police told her there was nothing they could do and the woman began thinking about moving out. One day, however, a letter to her neighbour was delivered to her by mistake. Hoping for evidence, the woman steamed open the envelope. She was shocked to find a cheque for $200 for the man's "portrayal of a religious freak" and immediately realised that the landlord had hired an actor in an attempt to drive her out of her apartment. The woman confronted her landlord and threatened to report him if he didn't reduce her rent, which he duly did.
