SMOKE ALARM
In Surrey, a middle-aged couple who had seen the last of their children leave
the nest rarely went up to the top floor of their house where their children had
had their rooms. One day, the mother noticed an odd chirping noise coming from
the top floor and, scared it was some horrible creepy crawly, she went and got
her husband. The husband, not the most courageous of men, crept slowly up the
stairs and searched all the rooms for the source of the noise, but he couldn't
work out where it was coming from. The next day, the husband called in an exterminator.
The exterminator arrived and after some fruitless searching, suddenly worked out
what the noise must be. He went downstairs and informed the couple that the batteries
in their smoke alarm needed changing.
