THE DIPLOMATS WAY
A British diplomat lost his job when the government changed after an election
and told his wife that they would have to be careful with money for a while. The
wife was saddened to see her husband in such a state and decided to sell some
of her possessions to ease their financial plight. One item she decided to sell
was very precious to her and she only wore to very special occasions. It was a
bronze pendant that had been presented to her during a visit to Bangkok. There
was an inscription on the pendant written in Thai, but everyone she asked said
they couldn't translate it and changed the subject or make excuses to leave. So
the diplomat's wife was more than a little ashamed when she came across the item
at the auction with the description, " 19th Century bronze medallion with inscription
in Thai, translates to 'Legalised Prostitute Number 283, Bangkok.'"
