LOCKED OUT
A police officer in the States decided to stop a speeding driver late one
winter's night. Pulling in behind the driver, he climbed out of his patrol car
to have a word with the offender, leaving the engine of the patrol car running
because the night air was so cold. He had a word with the driver, took his licence
and walked back to the police car to run a check on the documents, but was unable
to get back into his vehicle. Deciding to pretend at least to be a nice guy, he
walked back to the motorist, delivered a short sermon and sent him on his way
with a warning never to speed again. Looking around, he noticed that there was
nobody about. His radio was in the car and there was not a pay phone in sight.
Before too long, however, another police car turned up to find out why he wasn't
answering his radio. Just as he was about to talk to his colleague, an urgent
call came through and the brother officer had to speed off. "Get in the trunk
to keep warm," he said to the freezing policeman, "I'll come back and pick you
up later." Realising that this was the only way he was going to survive the cold,
he did so, only to find himself locked in until his colleague returned, five hours
later, with a large audience in tow.
