ONLY ONE LIFE

One night, a truck driver was driving through the outskirts of Chicago to deliver his last load of the week. Suddenly, a cat ran out into the road in front of him. The driver slammed his foot on the brakes, but he was sure that he was too late. He got out of the truck and looked underneath, but it was too dark to see anything. Retrieving a torch from inside the cab, he spotted the cat writhing on the sidewalk. Close to tears, the man did the decent thing and ended the cat's agony with a swift blow with a hammer. Then he climbed back into his truck and was about to depart when an old lady opened his cab door and began screaming at him. Thinking she must be the owner of the poor cat, he tried to explain but she was hysterical and started hitting him. Eventually, the woman calmed down, and told him that she saw him run over her neighbour's cat, stop the truck and then hit her own cat with a hammer.
